ISM OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE ON A SATELLITE SEMINAR

A key to the success of ISM's satellite seminars is the wide variety of panelists who have appeared on the programs, sharing practical information from their own experiences in the supply management profession. ISM is continually searching for supply professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and practical experiences relating to the various program topics.

As many of the past satellite seminar panelists have discovered, serving on the team to develop these programs and then traveling to Tempe for the actual production is an exciting experience, and it's a great way to enhance your supply management career! If you would like to explore the opportunity of becoming a satellite seminar panelist, contact Valerie Gryniewicz at 480/752-6276 or 800/888-6276, extension 3090 (e-mail vgryniewicz@ism.ws) or visit the Speaking Opportunities area of the ISM Web site at www.ism.ws/OnlineGuides/SpeakingOpportunities.cfm

The Business Source (an ISM partner)
offers summaries of two great business books every month.

The difference between really successful people and "also–rans" can be summed up in one word: brainpower.

Jack Welch, the legendary former head of General Electric remarked some time ago that competitive wars would be won, not by whips and chains, but by ideas – and he was so right.

The Japanese call this act of continually using new ideas to improve business practices "Kaizen" and it's at the heart of their huge success in the global market. They constantly make incremental improvements, which over time, stack up one on top the other to create massively successful companies.

So where can we find a stream of new and innovative ideas to help make us more successful?

One of the easiest and most underutilized methods is to learn directly from the world's business experts. So many of them have written books that offer us their proven strategies and winning ideas – ideas and strategies that took years to develop and perfect, and they are just sitting there for the taking – ready to propel our businesses to the next level and fatten our bottom line.

The problem is, who has the time to do all that reading? A recent study showed that 74.9% of all executives understand they need to read more to stay ahead of the curve but they simply don't have the time. And this troubling reality is directly impacting their profits – not to mention their careers!

There is a solution: You can get the key ideas and strategies from today's best business books without spending the hours it takes to read them. The Business Source (an ISM partner) offers summaries of two great business books every month. In 30 minutes a month you can get loads of powerful business strategies, straight from the world's leading business experts.

Every month you will learn best practices and powerful insights from leading thinkers such as Stephen Covey, Malcolm Gladwell and Jack Welch. And it all comes to you in bite size pieces you can use to create a constant flow of new ideas for improving your business. It will actually help make "Kaizen" a reality in your business – and your clients' businesses. What would that do to your bottom line?

If you could use a stream of powerful ideas in your company click here to learn more.

ACCREDITATION RESOURCE CHANGES TAKE EFFECT

As of March 1, 2005, ISM is no longer accepting new A.P.P. Exam registrations. Those individuals who registered prior to March 1, 2005, will have up to one year to take their A.P.P. Exams. Candidates may still register for C.P.M. Exam modules 1 and 2, which they can use to apply for the A.P.P. If they are interested in securing A.P.P. Original/Original Lifetime accreditation, they will need to postmark their completed application no later than February 28, 2007. Individuals already holding the A.P.P. designation may still apply for reaccreditation.

An extensive study of ISM's credentialing programs, conducted in association with Knapp & Associates International, Inc., initiated ISM's decision to free up resources to strengthen other programs and undertake new initiatives. Paramount to the recommendation was the diminishing interest in the A.P.P. designation within the supply management community, which prevented the program from remaining financially feasible. The decision to cease issuing new A.P.P.s received the support of ISM's Board of Directors. As of March 2005, ISM is allocating credentialing resources to activities of greater interest and benefit to supply management professionals. In the next year, the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) designation will also be reviewed and updated.

The A.P.P. will still be recognized and honored within the supply management profession. ISM encourages individuals who have achieved the A.P.P. designation to continue citing it as part of their professional identity and consider acquiring the C.P.M. designation. ISM will send communications to all A.P.P. professionals, and the ISM Web site will continue to offer detailed information on all Certification resources. Contact ISM Certification at certification@ism.ws or 800/888-6276, extension 3027. For a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the changes to the A.P.P. program, click here.

Put Your C.P.M. to Work For You -- Earn College Credit

Did you know that some colleges and universities award college credit for completion of the C.P.M. Exam? ISM has had the former and updated C.P.M. programs, and the new A.P.P. program, reviewed by the New York Board of Regents Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (NYBOR PONSI). The outcome of the review of the C.P.M. program through 2000 was a recommendation that colleges and universities consider awarding college credit to those who have passed the C.P.M. Exam. Those seeking college credit should carefully review the recommendation from the New York Board of Regents Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction relating to the period in which the candidate tested. Remember that the review provides a recommendation, so colleges and universities have the option to award credit based on some or all of the recommendation.

In 2000, both the updated C.P.M. program and the new A.P.P. program were evaluated in hopes that the updated programs would be awarded an improved recommendation. The NYBOR PONSI evaluation resulted in a recommendation for college credit for completion of the A.P.P. program for the first time, and the college recommendation for the C.P.M. was enhanced. In addition, there is now a recommendation that students receive additional credit for experience (provided candidates complete the appropriate project as outlined in the recommendation) for those candidates earning the C.P.M. under the updated program.

For those individuals who are currently using a company tuition reimbursement program to earn their degrees, the NYBOR PONSI recommendation can be a valuable tool in convincing the company to reimburse for the costs incurred while working toward the C.P.M. Because candidates can be awarded up to 12 college credits for earning the C.P.M., the cost of doing so may likely offset the cost of earning 12 hours of college credit.

Candidates who have already earned their C.P.M. and are now working toward an undergraduate degree may find that their institution will award credit based on the NYBOR PONSI. To find out if the institution you are working with will award college credit for earning the C.P.M. (former or updated program) or for the new A.P.P. program, please refer to the Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction College Credit Recommendation for the National Association of Purchasing Management.

The most current recommendation information is available on ISM's Web site. Pay particular attention to the recommendation for the program you completed. For more information click here.

What is the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) Program?
The C.P.M. program, introduced in 1974, is designed for experienced purchasing and supply managers. It focuses on managerial and leadership skills, plus a variety of specialized functions (e.g., sourcing analysis, supply and inventory management, forecasting) designed to enhance the value of procurement and supply management within an organization. It also covers the operational aspects of the purchasing and supply function, such as identifying requirements, preparing solicitations and agreements, negotiations, technology, quality, and maintaining relationships.

Who Should Take the C.P.M. Exam
Only those candidates working toward their certification or taking modules to meet the continuing education requirements for recertification are eligible to take the C.P.M. Exam. Testing for any other reason is strictly prohibited.

C.P.M. Requirements
ISM administers the C.P.M. program for the profession. Membership in ISM is not required to apply for certification; however, members receive substantial discounts on exam fees, study materials, and application fees. Basic program parameters are discussed below. Please see the appropriate application form for details. An applicant seeking C.P.M. certification must pass all four modules of the C.P.M. Exam. In addition, the applicant must (a) have five years of full-time professional (non-clerical, non-support) supply management experience, or (b) have a four-year degree from an accredited institution and three years of full-time professional (non-clerical, nonsupport) supply management experience.

Global Certification Accreditation Organization, ANSI, Honors the Institute for Supply Management ™ with Certification

(Tempe, AZ) -The Institute for Supply Management ™ (ISM) received certification accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) after being selected to participate in its pilot certification accreditation program.

ISM was granted certification accreditation in the area of supply management for its Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) and Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) designations. ANSI certification helps to identify qualified organizations to consumers and employers, provides mechanisms for systematically monitoring the performance of certified persons, and encourages individuals to participate in continuing professional development.

"There are numerous advantages to being ANSI certified," explains Christina Foster, SPHR, ISM's vice president of certification and diversity. "A primary advantage of accreditation is that our members, and those looking to achieve professional certification in the area of supply management, can be assured that our program meets and exceeds the international standards of certification. The Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) and Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) designations have always been recognized as the leading designations in the supply management field, and an ANSI certification aids in confirming this recognition."

As an impartial assessor, ANSI accreditation protects the integrity of a certification process, enhances consumer and public confidence in a certification program and the personnel who complete it, and facilitates the mobility of certified personnel across borders. ANSI's accreditation process includes the submission of documentation of the requirements identified in ISO/IEC 17024, an on-site audit, and the correction of any nonconformity's. ANSI, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system, initiated a pilot program for organizations who demonstrate diversity among personnel certifiers.

Founded in 1915, the Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) is the largest supply management organization in the world as well as one of the most respected. ISM's mission is to lead the supply management profession through its standards of excellence, research, promotional activities, and education. ISM's membership base includes more than 45,000 supply management professionals with a network of domestic and international affiliated associations. ISM is a not-for-profit institute that provides opportunities for the promotion of the profession and the expansion of professional skills and knowledge.
