Ttour of the Southwest Securities Financial Markets Center located in the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University. The Financial Markets Center is designed to create a boardroom type atmosphere, but have the functionality of a classroom, a videoconferencing suite and a place for students to conduct financial research. The facility serves as the classroom for the Practicum in Portfolio Management course for the student-managed Philip M. Dorr Alumni and Friends Endowed Investment Fund, currently valued at approximately $6 million. The Center also offers special information resources that provide access to the latest tools and data used by finance practitioners around the world including The Bloomberg Professional Service, Thomson ONE Analytics, Morningstar Research Reports, and CFA Institute Webcasts. Technology accounted for 41 cents of every dollar spent on the $900,000, state-of-the-art facility. The room features a custom designed and built, horseshoe-shaped conference table seating 20 people. Each seat is equipped with a wired microphone, as well as a Dell Latitude notebook computer, wired and wireless network access and power outlets. The room also features two 61 inch NEC plasma displays and two rear-projection screens. The Financial Markets Center has received national recognition as the best facility of its type. Presentation Magazine awarded the room with the Grand Prize for 2005 Best Presentation Room. Construction of the Financial Markets Center was made possible by a generous donation from Don and Ruth Buchholz. They provided all of the funds needed to build the Center and to begin a permanent endowment fund to finance the Center's ongoing annual expenses. Ruth Buchholz is an alumnus of Baylor and Don Buchholz is the founder of Southwest Securities. The new Financial Markets Center is available for use by Hankamer faculty and by students currently enrolled in the Practicum in Portfolio Management class.
