CONGRATULATIONS TO

RUTH KING
THE 2001 WINNER OF THE
COSGROVE AWARD
The purpose of the Cosgrove Award is to recognize members of District II that have made outstanding contributions to the Procurement profession. The contributions are leadership and continuing service on the Local affiliate and District level. The award is an expression of appreciation and respect of our fellow Procurement Professional by their peers. The Harold M. Cosgrove Award is the highest honor given on the District level. In October 1955 District II established the Harold M. Cosgrove Award. Prior to that time it was the Person of the Year Award. Harold Cosgrove was a pioneer member of PMA Tulsa. Tulsa was the first affiliate in District II. Mr. Cosgrove was an ardent worker for the advancement of the purchasing profession. His counsel and advice were sought by many members of PMA Tulsa, District II as well as the whole of PMA now NAPM. For many years he served as Executive Secretary for NAPM Tulsa. In 1951 Mr. Cosgrove was the recipient of the J. Shipman Gold Metal Award by the Purchasing Management Association for his long time service.
Reflections on the Affiliate Excellence of the Year Award
By Ruth L. King
What did winning this award mean to NAPM-Central Texas?
To the affiliate officers, committee chairs and general membership, obviously a great sense of pride because it brings worldwide recognition to this affiliate. It wasn't just a "spur of the moment" idea from the current Board of Directors; it was the result of many years of efforts by volunteers who dared to dream that this affiliate could receive this kind of recognition. Their creative thinking and a sense of "what do we have to lose" attitude brought about many good improvements.
When Stephanie Peters, C.P.M., President was asked about this award, her reply was "It was the result of volunteers whose dedicated efforts produced an amazing array of opportunities for members and non-member professionals in the Central Texas area."
The impact of this award will have a direct effect on recruiting new members through meetings with the CEOs or Presidents of companies in Central Texas. It will be one of the best marketing tools an affiliate could have.
To the affiliates in the Southwest Supply Chain Forum: we would encourage you to evaluate what your affiliate does not only just for your members, but your community and the supply management profession and strive to actively participate in all.
The following quotation by Charles Kingsley is applicable:
"We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements in life,
when all that we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic
about."
So become enthusiastic about your affiliate and see what happens!
A little about Ruth Lambert King, her life and accomplishments:
Ruth King has been a strong promoter for certification since the C.P.M. program began. And she took the C.P.M. exam when it was first offered and failed by only 2 points; family and work circumstances delayed her re-taking this exam until now and she is taking a Review course.
Her spouse, George, was diagnosed with cancer in 1980 and has undergone numerous operations and procedures but is a tough survivor. She and her husband moved to Waco where she took a sabbatical from purchasing management for 8 years to care for an aging mother and family while working in the School of Education at Baylor University.
In December 1999 she had a heart attack, angioplasty and a coronary stint implant. She underwent cardiovascular rehabilitation and resumed work full-time again in the middle of January 2000.
She is the mother of three children (her oldest son Doug is deceased) a son David, and a daughter Linda; and 4 grandchildren- 1 boy Doug, and 3 girls, Emily, Katie and Christine, all who have grown up supporting her involvement in purchasing management affiliate work.
She and George enjoy the theatre, music, and travel, and are active supporters of Baylor University sports.
Ruth King has been an involved member of the National Association of Purchasing Management since she became a charter member of the Austin Purchasing Management Association in 1970.
Her participation and awards include not only the making of a handmade banner in 1973 for the affiliate but the following:
NAPM INVOLVEMENT

Editors note: I think that Ruth was the one who taught President J. F. Kennedy the saying, "Ask not what your county can do for you, but what you can do for your country."
